Canton Fire Station, Mockbee/Coker http://samuelmockbee.net/work/architecture/canton-fire-station/ http://samuelmockbee.net/work/architecture/canton-fire-station/#comments Thu, 10 Sep 2009 21:56:22 +0000 admin http://samuelmockbee.net/?p=473 Located on Canton’s main drag, which was once populated with shotgun-style homes, the Canton Fire Station No. 3 is a modernized version of the town’s architectural history. Notable for its skeletal façade, it’s constructed with corrugated metal and metal tubing painted white. The gable is said to reference the town’s water tower, also visible from Main Street.

Magee Church, Mockbee/Coker http://samuelmockbee.net/work/architecture/magee-church/ http://samuelmockbee.net/work/architecture/magee-church/#comments Tue, 08 Sep 2009 19:54:45 +0000 admin http://samuelmockbee.net/?p=480 The main challenge for the architects on this project was creating a sacred place of worship in the middle of Southern commercial suburbia. The church is located near car dealerships, a Wal-Mart and a liquor store. They chose a simply constructed design and used white corrugated siding to give the church a look that recalls Southern clapboard churches of the past. Placing the structure on a hill and surrounded by a sloping green lawn, the setting sun bathes the side of the church in golden light. Inside, a carefully placed baffle and windows let light into a vaulted-ceiling room that holds a congregation of 35.

Barton House, Mockbee/Coker http://samuelmockbee.net/work/architecture/barton-house/ http://samuelmockbee.net/work/architecture/barton-house/#comments Sun, 06 Sep 2009 20:08:18 +0000 admin http://samuelmockbee.net/?p=484 Familiar to any student of Mockbee’s work, the Barton house displays the architect’s love for merging modernist design and placing it in a southern vernacular. Located on an estate populated by oaks draped with Spanish moss, the home is split in two directions, with a middle entryway. It stands out on the landscape with strikingly modern details: rigid cement walls, an angled metal roof and awning, a window wall of bric-a-brac design, a screened porch of open wood ceiling and planked floor.
