The Rural Studio, an architecture program cofounded by Samuel Mockbee within the School of Architecture at Auburn University, has designed and built more than one hundred community projects and charity homes in west Alabama and educated more than eight hundred architecture students in a service-learning model that has garnered national and international recognition.

The Design For Development Society (DFD) is a non-profit that works with communities and student designers to provide solutions that are the consequence of poverty. One specific solution the DFD is current assisting with is to build bicycle ambulances that allow rural communities to transport injured people to medical facilities quickly and safely in southern Africa.
